Doral's "Sister Cities" Event: A Cultural Mosaic in the Heart of Miami

By Jairo Cruz

The Doral Cultural Arts Center provided the space for an event full of artistic and cultural appreciation. Sister Cities is a program dedicated to cultural, economic, and social cooperation and exchange, led by six countries seeking to expand their borders through trade, tourism, and education.

As the first University founded and first higher institution accredited in the city of Doral, it is an honor for us to continue supporting this initiative that has promoted prosperity and brotherhood between governments and communities around the world for years. I’d also like to extend our gratitude to all the artists and dignitaries who embellished this consular reception.

It was an evening of cultural celebration and global camaraderie at the City of Doral‘s Consular Reception and Sister Cities Art Showcase. The Mayor and Council were honored to welcome the visiting dignitaries from our Sister Cities and Consulates from around the world as we highlighted our fruitful international partnerships through an evening of creativity, diplomacy, and goodwill.

Millennia Atlantic University is grateful to all the participants who helped bring our Sister Cities’ relationships to life through this important cultural exchange:

– Armenia, Colombia

– Barranquilla, Colombia

– Guatemala City, Guatemala

– Higuey, Dominican Republic

– Oranjestad, Aruba

– Xizhi District of New Taipei City, Taiwan

This gathering showcased the diverse cultures of our Sister Cities, it also strengthened the bonds of friendship and cooperation that form the foundation of our shared international community.

Barranquilla, Colombia, led the festivities with an energetic display of its famed carnival. “The group of Millo” named: “SONCURRAMBA” from Miami., captivated audiences with the infectious rhythms of the Caribbean coast. The event was further enlivened by a striking exhibition of carnival photographs and costumes, with the Kings and Queens of the Carnival gracing the event with their royal presence.

Not to be outdone, Armenia, Colombia, offered a mesmerizing glimpse into the country’s folklore through a display of its myths and legends. Standout characters such as Maria Montes, La Llorona, and El Moham were brought to life in a vibrant cultural narrative. This was complemented by spirited dance performances and a showcase of Armenia’s signature crafts and its prized Quindío coffee, renowned as one of the finest in the Colombian coffee region.

Taiwan’s contribution was no less impressive, with New Taipei City’s delegates delivering a powerful drum performance and a traditional Taipei dance, embodying the spirit and energy of their culture.

Further strengthening the bonds of international friendship, consular authorities from Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Aruba attended the event. Each brought a slice of their unique cultural identities to Doral, enriching the city’s multicultural tapestry.

The event underscored the City of Doral’s commitment to fostering cooperative relationships with its international counterparts. The Sister Cities program aims to create exchanges in culture, education, tourism, sports, business, and government, fostering respect, understanding, and cooperation.

The “Sister Cities” event is a celebration of cultures and a bridge that connects Doral to the world. As the city looks forward to more of these events, the echoes of drums, the colors of the costumes, and the taste of foreign lands linger in the air, inviting residents and visitors alike to revel in the world’s collective heritage right in the heart of Miami.
