Financial Aid Application Steps

In order to receive financial aid, the students must complete the following steps:

1. Gather information on what is available

Go online to review the information provided by the U.S. Department of Education at https://studentaid.gov or phone 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Information is available about applying for federal student aid, work-study, and loans. There is also a link provided where you can look up the agency in the state where you reside that may have information on any available aid, loans or grants at the state level.

2. Get your Federal Student Aid ID

Students and parents of dependent students are encouraged to create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). Your FSA ID is made up of a unique username and password that you create which will be used to confirm your identity.

You will need an FSA ID to access your financial aid information on some of the U.S. Department of Education websites and to electronically sign Federal Student Aid documents, such as the FAFSA. Since your FSA ID is used to electronically sign legally binding documents related to your financial aid application(s) it is considered in this context to have the same legal status as your written signature. Therefore, make sure not to give your FSA ID to anyone, as this can lead to identity theft. If you do not already have a FSA ID, click here to learn how to create your FSA ID.

3. Gather the necessary tax information

If you are a student who is married but filed taxes separately, or if you are a student who completed an amended tax return, you will need to bring in copies of your tax returns if assistance is needed from our financial aid office to complete the FAFSA. All other students may link to the IRS website from the FAFSA when completing the application.

4. Complete your FAFSA

Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1 each year. The FAFSA may be completed online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.

Be sure to list Millennia Atlantic University as a school choice when completing the FAFSA and add MAU’S FAFSA code (041825). Check the accuracy of your Social Security number (and/or your spouse’s if married and parent(s) if dependent) on your FAFSA and other forms. An incorrect Social Security number will delay the processing of your financial aid application. Be sure and list your name as it appears on your Social Security card.

5. Review your Student Aid Report

After your FAFSA is completed and submitted, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) will review your application and provide a decision about what aid you may be eligible for in about 3 to 5 days. ED will send you your Student Aid Report (SAR) which is created based on your FAFSA. Review your SAR and, if necessary, make changes or corrections and submit your SAR for reprocessing. Your complete corrected SAR will contain your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) - the number used to determine your federal student aid eligibility.

6. Explore alternative options for aid

MAU does have some limited scholarships available and private loans may also be available for those who qualify. To get more information on other loan options, send an email to bursar@maufl.edu, and to get information on possible scholarship options send an email of inquiry to studentsvcs@maufl.edu.

7. Complete your Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note

Go to https://studentaid.gov/entrance-counseling/ and sign in with your FSA ID. Once you are logged in, complete and submit evidence of your completion of the required Entrance Counseling and completion of your Master Promissory Note, https://studentaid.gov/mpn/. Remember, by signing the Master Promissory Note, you are pledging to repay your student loan(s). Borrow only what you need.

8. Funds are awarded

Awarded funds should be forwarded to your school account within a few weeks after all financial aid information is completed by MAU and the U.S. Department of Education. If you are selected for verification, the process will take longer. Verification is the process the school uses to confirm that the data reported on your FAFSA is accurate. There is no way of predetermining if you will be selected for verification.
